Black hole is a space-time – a mathematical model that joins space and time to form a continuum – that has a powerful gravitational pull. Not even radiations, i.e., light can escape its pull. It takes up any particle that is close to it and increases in its mass. It is a product of masses squeezed together that are so dense and tight that a gravitational pole is created. The gravitational pull is so strong that it can succumb a massive star as well.
The black disks in the middle are the event horizon where no light is present that could reach us. Despite the name, they are not all black. The gas and dust trapped around them are so compact, and the temperature rises to a billion degrees. Eventually, it succumbs into the hole, making the black hole glow. The rings present around the black hole are the photons moving in concentric circles. These are the ‘Einstein rings.’ They are the most mysterious objects in the whole world.
Can a black hole vanish?
Yes. When it has nothing left to take up, by the time it shrinks and disappears. Now the question is, “What happens to the particles inside the hole?”. It emits various radiations just before vanishing. All the particles taken in are released in different forms of energy and masses. It finally evaporates in a gigantic explosion.
What it’s like near a black hole?
As we gradually move towards the hole, the temperature rises to a million degrees Celsius. The moment you enter the vicinity, the blackhole immediately pulls you inside. The escape velocity of a black hole exceeds the speed of light, and no particle can achieve it.
On the other hand, the temperature inside is a negative million degrees. What exactly happens inside it is not known to date. If probes are sent inside the hole to find the answers to our questions, no information can reach us as the hole won’t let the signals out. The probe destroys within a few seconds. The only way of communication is by using ‘Morse Code,’ but the code frequency also reduces by time. It looks like the secrets are safe forever.
What happens inside the black hole?
No law of physics can explain what happens inside a black hole. However, theories suggest the phenomenon of singularity. Singularity means a point of infinite density. The center is the “black hole singularity.” The particle which succumbs into the hole experiences stretching due to the strong gravitational pull. If the particle is a person, the individual will die instantly at this moment. But in fact, the fate of the person would be far stranger than that.
If a person is watching you being sucked by a black hole; your image will move very slowly, and at a point, you appear frozen. But in reality, you disappear. Thus, all laws of physics, especially relativity, cease to operate at this point of singularity; and quantum effects may come into play. Maybe a combined theory of quantum gravity could explain black holes without the need for a singularity.
What if a blackhole replaces the sun?
Black holes take up anything that is in its vicinity. Saying that, if a black hole of the same size as the sun replaces the sun in the milky way galaxy, all the planets would still revolve in its orbit just as now. It can suck planets present within a radius of 10 miles. For instance, the earth is present at a good 90 million miles away from the sun and will remain unaffected (will not be sucked in).
Is there a blackhole close to us?
Yes, there is a black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy – ‘Sagittarius A*.’ It is about 4 million times the mass of the sun. The theory of Pluto vanishing into the black hole is not true. If that happens, then our whole solar system is at risk.
However, as the studies continue, perhaps one day, we will know if they are gates to another dimension like a wormhole; or maybe we will never know and come to accept their existence as they are.
